Ashley Owens

Coach

Ashley Owens has been a huge advocate for swimming as long as she can remember. She got her start swimming on a local swim team and continued swimming competitively into high school even swimming at a varsity level as just an 8th grader. While her competitive swimming career was cut short due to a spinal cord injury, in the time she did compete she acquired a wealth of knowledge in swimming and an understanding of what it takes to perform at optimum levels as an athlete. She has over 9 years of experience teaching swimming.

Ashley has been a swim coach for over 6 years, five of which she was the head coach of the Rio Rancho Desert Sharks Metro team. Despite her young age Ashley has had a great deal of success as a coach, and each year she head coached, attendance numbers of her team soared (reaching a team size of over 100 swimmers many seasons) and she lead her team to top 3 finishes each season in a league of over 30 teams. She is currently a USA certified, level 2 ASCA, coach as well as a certified EMT. She has over 8 years of experience life-guarding, she was also a head lifeguard at both the Rio Rancho aquatic center and Cabezon pool, where she trained guards in not only water safety and CPR, but also in how to properly teach swim lessons. Because she is currently pursuing a degree in Nursing, she tries to emphasize water safety as much as possible with her swimmers. She has been with Sudden Thunder Aquatic Racers since October and has found it to be a dream job. While she hopes that all her athletes can enjoy success in swimming, she also hopes to instill the concept of swimming as a life activity as well, which she leads by example. She looks forward to continuing with the team in hopes of instilling proper technique, safety, and fun into her swimmers.
